With Philadelphia Union left-back Kai Wagner available for grabs in the January transfer window, Rangers could engage in a bidding war with French powerhouse Marseille.
The Philadelphia Union announced at the beginning of December that negotiations with Kai Wagner on a new contract at Subaru Park had begun. The left-back, who has been with the team for a long time, was eager to prevent his American employers from becoming free agents on New Year’s Day.
But it seems that not much has changed in the three weeks since sporting director Ernst Tanner expressed his wish to keep Wagner in Philadelphia (The Philadelphia Inquirer).
The gifted left-back will soon reach free agency in just 48 hours. And assuming nothing happens until Jools Holland’s Hootenanny ends, the wideman connected to the Rangers will be available for nothing at all during the winter transfer window.
Rangers are seeking a new left-back.
Wagner has reportedly been observed by Rangers in MLS action, per the Daily Record. Likewise, Fredrik Oppegard, a left-back who plays with Malik Tillman at PSV Eindhoven, the league leaders, is a skilled player.
Wagner is the more experienced choice; he is five years older than Oppegard. But with 10 assists from 37 games in 2023, the former Schalke player looks like a deal too good to refuse—Wagner has been one of the most reliable creative threats in America the past three seasons.
Wagner, who ostensibly plays defense, has 39 goal contributions in 170 Philadelphia Union appearances. Naturally, other teams are also expressing interest in Rangers. Wagner met with Marseille, one of the largest teams in France, according to La Tribune.
