Blackpool are in battle with Reading to sign Charlton star

Blackpool has faced a significant defensive challenge this season, conceding 32 league goals. Reports indicate their interest in strengthening their defensive lineup, with attention drawn to Charlton defender Terell Thomas.

Football Insider suggests that Blackpool manager Neil Critchley is eyeing Thomas, an experienced player capable of performing in central defense or left-back positions. However, the rumor suggests they face competition in pursuing Thomas, who has recently fallen in the pecking order at Charlton. Allegedly, his former club Reading is also keeping an eye on the 28-year-old ahead of the January transfer window. Thomas, who has played for Wigan, Crewe, AFC Wimbledon, and Charlton since his free transfer from Reading in the summer of 2022, has seen limited playtime lately. He has been on the bench for Charlton’s last three games and started only two of their past 11 league matches. Having made 37 appearances for Charlton, with his contract expiring at the end of the season, the club seems open to the prospect of selling him next month.

Former Blackpool manager Michael Appleton, now managing Charlton, aims to make his mark on the team he inherited after taking over following the summer transfer window’s closure in September.

Currently, Charlton sits 12th in the League One table, trailing Blackpool by seven points and four positions. While both teams have suffered losses in their past two league games, Charlton’s inconsistency appears more pronounced. Their last league victory dates back to November 28. Conversely, Blackpool secured a 3-1 win against Bristol Rovers on December 23 but subsequently lost to Burton and Port Vale.

Neil Critchley is reportedly eager to strengthen Blackpool’s defense, acknowledging their struggle after conceding 32 goals in 25 League One matches.
