The Detroit Lions have faced more tough decisions, undergoing significant roster changes within a span of 24 hours.
On Friday, the team announced the signing of kicker Michael Badgley from the practice squad to the active roster, along with adding offensive lineman Michael Schofield to the practice squad. Concurrently, the Lions also made two departures: releasing defensive lineman Chris Smith from the practice squad and waiving fullback Jason Cabinda.
The decision to waive Cabinda comes shortly after the Lions activated him from the injured reserve list (IR). With Cabinda’s departure, the team still has an open roster spot before their upcoming game against the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington on Saturday. Additionally, both C.J. Gardner-Johnson and James Houston, who have returned to practice following their injuries, are listed as unavailable for this week’s game. This situation sets the stage for the Lions to elevate veteran linebacker Bruce Irvin from the practice squad. Since joining the Lions on Nov. 13, Irvin has played in only one game, recording a sack in the Week 13 victory against the New Orleans Saints.
Detroit has faced challenges this season, particularly against top-tier quarterbacks, especially those adept at making plays outside the pocket. Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys has displayed dominance while playing at home, contributing to the Cowboys’ flawless record at AT&T Stadium this season (7-0). Given the Lions’ struggles to apply pressure on opposing quarterbacks, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Irvin on the field this weekend to bolster the team’s defensive efforts.
