In 2024, Arch Manning intends to play his sophomore season in Texas, even if starting quarterback Quinn Ewers of the Longhorns decides to return to Austin rather than declare for the NFL draft.
As Texas wraps up practice in preparation for Monday’s Sugar Bowl, highly regarded rookie quarterback Arch Manning revealed he has been taking all of the backup reps while seated on the metal benches on the sideline at the Superdome, where his grandfather, Archie Manning, has his No. 8 hanging from the rafters in New Orleans.
Born and raised in New Orleans, Arch Manning is Cooper Manning’s eldest son and the nephew of former NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning. He mentioned that he brought Ewers to his residence this week, and during a short lull in the College Football Playoff semifinal practice and meeting schedule, his mother prepared a home-cooked dinner.
Manning is improving, according to Texas offensive coordinator Kyle Flood, as he increases his practice reps in order to get ready for the bowl. Maalik Murphy was Ewers’ primary backup in 2023, with Manning playing in the No. 3 spot. With Manning’s future role written on the wall, Murphy decided to move to Duke.
Flood described Manning as “approaching everything like he’s the starting quarterback.” And in my opinion, that’s the secret to being prepared for calls at all times when serving in a reserve capacity.
“We’ve got a ton of confidence in Arch.”
If Ewers decides to forego the 2024 NFL Draft, he is projected to be selected in the first round. If he comes back, Manning might have serious competition for the starting position.
“You can just tell that he wants to learn as much as he can,” said Ewers. “He’s always seeking clarification and making an effort to do his best. I believe he is aware of the chance that is before him and that he will not throw it away.
