This MLB summer, the Houston Astros have lost another member of their coaching staff.
With manager Dusty Baker’s retirement and Joe Espada taking over as manager, the Houston Astros have lost another member of their coaching staff.
This time, it’s Astros assistant hitting coach Jason Kanzler, who is taking a leave of absence and joining the executive office of the Chicago Cubs.
According to The Athletic, the 33-year-old Kanzler is joining the Cubs and will take on the role of director of player development.
Kanzler, who was elevated to assistant general manager on the Northside, is essentially assuming Jared Banner’s position with the Cubs.
As a member of the MLB coaching staff for three seasons, Kanzler has contributed to the development of a strong offensive base that helped the Astros win their second World Series as a franchise in 2022.
Kanzler has a variety of positions in the sport before being called up to the Majors to serve as a coach. He played in the minor leagues until 2015.
He will not accept his offer to oversee all Cubs player development, a major job boost given that Kanzler is clearly more focused on his profession. Barring a terrible stay with Chicago, one might expect much more from him at the young age of 33.
