Hurricanes land steel giant Nucor as jersey sponsor.
The Hurricanes are the first major professional sports club to earn a sponsorship contract with the nation’s largest steel maker and recycler, Charlotte-based Nucor. The squad will begin wearing a Nucor patch on its jerseys tomorrow night when it meets the Blues at PNC Arena. Terms of the agreement were not immediately known, but most NHL jersey patch deals are priced in the mid-seven-figure area yearly and league rules stipulate that they must last for a minimum of three years. Oak View Group represented the Hurricanes in their quest for a jersey sponsor and negotiations.
For Nucor, the Hurricanes partnership represents a potential to boost exposure within its home state, as well as across the U.S. and Canada when the team is on the road. In addition to providing hospitality at PNC Arena, the Hurricanes will endeavor to provide Nucor with hospitality options for workers and clients in other NHL arenas. The company aims to leverage the collaboration to highlight its sustainable steel products.
The arrangement between the Hurricanes and Nucor comes with the team preparing to begin development of a mixed-use entertainment area around PNC Arena, which will surely require a lot of steel. The project will comprise at least 100,000 square feet of retail and dining space, 150,000 square feet of office space, 200 multi-family residential units, a 150-room hotel, and a 3,000-5,000-capacity indoor music arena.
Nucor’s short sports sponsorship history includes collaborations with the Charlotte-based Wells Fargo Championship golf event and USL Championship soccer club Louisville City FC.
