The Daily Mirror claims that West Ham technical director Tim Steidten is prepared to raid Ajax once more with the signing of Steven Bergwijn.
Despite being the highest paid player at the team ($85,000 per week), the former Tottenham winger is “unpopular” at the Eredivisie giants, according to a report by Mirror writer Ryan Taylor on the official paper’s website on January 6.
He continued by saying that the Hammers are prepared to move forward with their ambitions to bring the 26-year-old to the London Stadium after beginning negotiations with the Netherlands international’s agency Muy Manero in November.
Earlier in the summer, Steidten faced Ajax twice, bringing Edson Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus to the London Stadium.
Point to prove
Naturally, Bergwijn has prior Premier League experience having played for the Hammers’ bitter rivals Tottenham, although it’s safe to say he wasn’t exactly a success there.
After signing from PSV in January 2020, he made 83 appearances overall and scored just eight goals. He finally returned to the Eredivisie with Ajax, where he has been among the more reliable players in a season that is appalling by their standards.
Despite his seven goals in 13 top-flight games this season, the 26-year-old is reportedly disgruntled and has a deteriorating relationship with both the club’s officials and supporters, according to the Mirror.
Although he was frequently used as a squad option at Tottenham, it may not have exactly worked out for him there. Nevertheless, he will feel that he still has a chance to demonstrate his ability to succeed in the Premier League. Furthermore, Steidten should be trusted in the market as he has shown usefulness with his transfer business thus far.
