After spending one season in Norman, Oklahoma tight end Blake Smith made his way onto the transfer portal on Tuesday night.After three years at Texas A&M, where he started six games and caught two passes, Smith transferred to OU. This season, Smith, the Sooners’ backup tight end, has played 10 games under Jeff Lebby and Joe Jon Finley. He has caught two receptions for 30 yards and one touchdown.
With Austin Stogner no longer eligible and Smith gone, Oklahoma will only have Crimson and Cream, a tight end with pass-catching experience, returning. True freshman Kade McIntyre caught one pass for 26 yards against Arkansas State before getting hurt, ending what could have been a respectable season for the player from Nebraska. Smith would probably be buried on the depth chart the next season, behind incoming freshman Davon Mitchell and Southeastern Louisiana transfer Bauer Sharp, even if he saw a good deal of playing time in 2023. McIntyre’s athleticism would have made him a more valuable tight end for the Sooners offense than Smith if he can maintain his health. Smith joins redshirt freshman Jason Llewellyn as the second Sooners tight end to access the transfer site since it launched on December 4.
