Matthew Stafford is returning to a familiar place.
It was the best that could have been written. This coming Saturday, when the Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford’s team plays his previous team, the Detroit Lions, in an NFC Wild Card game, Stafford will be going back to his old haunts. Prior to the Rams’ journey to Detroit, Kelly, Stafford’s wife, has already expressed her delight for her husband.
“Old man, another fantastic season. You look better than ever in year fifteen. Kelly said, “Time for post-season and to go back to where it all began,” as the caption for an Instagram picture featuring the Stafford family.
Although Stafford’s NFL career began with the Lions, it was the Rams that would eventually win his first and only Super Bowl championship. In the 2009 NFL Draft, Stafford was chosen first overall by the Lions. Until the 2020 NFL season, he was the quarterback for Detroit in that year. The former Georgia Bulldogs signal-caller was traded to the Rams in January 2021 by the Lions, who also gave up some draft picks and Jared Goff in the transaction.
A scorching streak to close the regular season allowed Stafford and the Rams to squeak into the postseason. Los Angeles got off to a 3-6 start, but they would go on to win 7-1 the remainder of the way. In contrast, the Lions’ 12-5 record allowed them to win the NFC North division title. The Lions have not won a division championship since 1993.
With any luck, Stafford’s experience with Detroit’s atmosphere can help the Rams win on Sunday at Ford Field.
