The Chicago Cubs free agent target that the Toronto Blue Jays are expressing interest in could complicate their efforts to sign the player again.
This offseason, the Chicago Cubs lost out on a number of free agent targets. Their attention has returned to Cody Bellinger now that it has passed.
Bellinger rejuvenated his career with the Cubs during the 2023 season. The former MVP had been in poor condition for a few years before his time in Chicago, where he found his form again. Bellinger may have landed a big contract in 2023 even though he hasn’t exactly lived up to his 47 home run season from 2019, the year he won MVP.
With 26 home runs, the 28-year-old slashed.307/.356/.525. The Cubs couldn’t find a replacement for him, so losing him would be a problem. He was a mainstay in the lineup.
Luckily for Chicago, Bellinger has been active for the other teams that expressed interest in him early in the offseason. The San Francisco Giants signed Jung Hoo Lee, the Toronto Blue Jays made depth moves, and the New York Yankees acquired Juan Soto.
The Blue Jays might still be interested in signing the left-handed slugger, despite reports that the Cubs are the favorites.
According to Ben Nicholson-Smith, Ross Atkins, general manager of Toronto, stated that while they are happy with their existing lineup, they are still looking to add a bat.
Given how logical it is for Bellinger to sign with the Blue Jays, this may be a problem for Chicago.
The Blue Jays should be interested in acquiring a bat capable of hitting thirty or more home runs in a season, even though Toronto signed other players this offseason.
For the Cubs, who haven’t indicated that they want to spend money in free agency this winter, this may at the very least result in a higher price.
