Now that the Los Angeles Rams have been eliminated from the playoffs, it might be time to start thinking about the prospect of some of the team’s veterans retiring. One of the most likely contenders to call it a career would be veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, as he will be turning 36 in less than a month. But Stafford jokingly put any retirement rumors to rest in his postgame conference after the close loss in the Wild Card, assuring that he will be back for next season barring any setbacks.
“That’s my plan right now,” Stafford stated. “My plan is to be back, and you’ll have to deal with me for another year, so have fun with that.” Ian Rapoport also thinks that the Rams QB looks the best he has in a while, and he talked more about it on NFL GameDay.
“He is vintage Matthew Stafford,” Rapoport remarked. “These people that have seen Stafford for years say that he is throwing the ball as well as he has in a very long time, and that is one reason why he has no plans to retire.” And he’s not wrong.
Stafford has been struggling with an elbow ailment for the last two of seasons, but it did not look like it hindered him at all as he guided the Rams to the playoffs with a 10-7 record. But despite that, Stafford passed for 367 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to the Detroit Lions with a very noisy Ford Field booing him. He also played through a finger injury that he got mid-way through the game, further reinforcing that he is one of the hardest players there is in the NFL. And by his own statements, he’s ready to run it back again in 2024.
