In 2023, the Sooners had three kickers on their roster, including their reserve, but for 2024, the competition has gotten more intense.
On Friday, the kicker position for Oklahoma became slightly more clear.
Redi Mustafaraj, a fourth-year student from Atoka, Oklahoma, registered as a graduate student on the transfer site.
After attending Northeastern A&M (OK) to OU, Mustafaraj was unable to break into the starting lineup during his one year in Norman.
Zach Schmit took the position in 2022 and held it in 2023 despite sporadic clutch field goal accuracy problems.
Freshman Gavin Marshall served as Schmit’s backup both seasons. According to coach Brent Venables, Marshall’s injuries from the previous season prevented him from battling for the position during practice with special teams analyst Jay Nunez.
Since Marshall is probably healthy and Schmit is returning after two seasons as the starter, the competition in 2024 could be fiercer than ever.
Additionally, OU has added two kickers for 2024: Tyler Keltner, a graduate transfer who spent a year at Florida State and four years at East Tennessee State, and true freshman Liam Evans, a true freshman who comes to OU from Moore and is ranked among the nation’s top high school kickers by Kohl’s Kicking Camp.
According to Mustafaraj, he still has two years left on his collegiate football eligibility. He is immediately eligible to play in the upcoming season as a graduate transfer.
