Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love made a big mistake late in his team’s defeat against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night, and he didn’t conceal it after the game.
With less than a minute left in their Divisional Round game against the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., the Packers held the ball and trailed 24-21. Love was attempting to mount a game-tying or game-winning drive when 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw intercepted him to secure the victory.
Love attempted to push the ball over the center of the field. He also flung the pass over his body as he ran. You can see the play below:
When asked about the interception, Love informed reporters that he had committed a “mortal sin.”
“Looking back, absolutely, toss it away. I’m not sure whether I had a chance to run or go out of bounds, but I forced it over the middle late, which is a fatal sin that cost us,” Love told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “So that’s something I’ll check into. That’s an area where I’ll be able to learn from and improve in the future.”
Greenlaw and Fred Warner provided in-depth coverage on Christian Watson. Love will see this when he watches the footage and realizes he made a poor read in addition to throwing over his body.
Of course, Love and the Packers can take plenty of positives from their 2023 season. Love may have helped Kyle Shanahan and the Niners snap an ugly trend, but he outperformed expectations throughout the season. Green Bay should be optimistic about the future given Love’s performance in his debut season as a starter.
