Good News: LSU Tigers confirm another addition to squad

LSU appoints Corey Raymond as Coach of Defensive Backs
Raymond will handle duties as the Tigers’ defensive backs coach, returning to Baton Rouge.
He’s returned. After a stay at Florida, LSU is completing an agreement with Corey Raymond to return as the Tigers’ defensive backs coach.

Although a title is still being worked out, sources tell LSU Country that it is anticipated that he will take on tasks with the cornerbacks.

Returning to Death Valley for another season with the Bayou Bengals is Raymond, the man responsible for creating the “DBU” tradition in Baton Rouge.

Prior to Brian Kelly’s arrival in Baton Rouge ahead of the 2022 season, Raymond was a member of the Tigers for ten seasons.

After that, Raymond worked with Billy Napier as the defensive backs coach at Florida for two seasons before the two ended their relationship.

Throughout Raymond’s tenure at LSU, his secondary has turned out seven First-Team All-Americans: Eric Reid (2012), Jalen Mills (2015), Jamal Adams (2016), Tre’Davious White (2016), Greedy Williams (2018), Grant Delpit (2018 and 2019), and Derek Stingley Jr. (2019, 2020).

An more significant addition to Kelly’s defense group.

Examining the additional appointments Kelly has made in the past two weeks:

The Appointed

Blake Baker is in charge of defense.

After spending the previous two seasons as Missouri’s safeties coach and defensive coordinator, Baker now works for LSU. In 2021, Baker served as LSU’s linebackers’ coach. Before that, he was the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech from 2015–18 and Miami (Fla.) from 2019–20. He joins the LSU staff with eight years of experience as a defensive coordinator.

“Throughout his career, Blake has been a successful defensive coordinator, and he has spent the last two years at Missouri in the SEC,” Kelly said. He is unique in his field because of his capacity to create very effective defenses while also developing and inspiring his players. It gives me great pleasure to greet Blake and his family back in Baton Rouge.

The 2023 Missouri defense led by Baker was a major factor in the Tigers’ 11-2 overall record and their 14-3 Cotton Bowl victory over No. 7 Ohio State. With 11 victories, Missouri had their greatest season in over a decade. For the first time since the 2016 campaign, Missouri kept the Buckeyes without a touchdown in the victory over Ohio State.

Bo Davis: Line of Defense

After three seasons at Texas, where he led the Longhorns to the College Football Playoffs in 2023 with one of the best defenses in the country, Davis has joined the LSU staff. Davis worked with the Longhorns for six years, from 2011 to 13 as the defensive tackles coach and from 2021 to 23 as the defensive line coach.

Davis was a member of the strength and conditioning staff when LSU won the 2003 national title. He also played for the Tigers in the early 1990s and worked as a graduate assistant with the football team from 1995 to 1997.

Having produced some of the best defensive lineman in college football, Davis is returning to LSU. Davis has coached college football’s defensive line for 12 years, during which time he has produced seven all-Americans and 17 all-conference picks. In addition, he has coached players who have taken home the Outland Trophy, Conference USA, Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Kelly stated, “Bo brings a wealth of proven success as a defensive line coach at both the professional and collegiate level throughout his distinguished career.” “Coach Davis is also a superb player developer and recruiter for the players under his supervision.” I’m thrilled to have LSU coach Bo Davis back.

During his collegiate career, Davis has participated in three national championships. As the defensive line coach for the Crimson Tide, he won the 2003 championship at LSU and the 2009 and 2015 titles at Alabama.

Kevin Peoples: Line of Defense

Kevin Peoples, the defensive line coach for Missouri, will join Kelly and company in Baton Rouge as a defensive assistant. The news was first reported by Pete Thamel of ESPN.

Following LSU’s hiring of Blake Baker, the defensive coordinator from Missouri, all eyes were on Baker’s staff. Bo Davis was recruited by the Tigers to coach the defensive line, and they weren’t done there either.

Peoples complements Kelly’s defensive formation. That is, a crew of the highest caliber. He probably concentrates on the defensive ends and EDGE rushers.

It’s a match made in heaven for a coach to collaborate with the recently appointed defensive coordinator Blake Baker. Having served as Tulane’s defensive line coach for four years, he is familiar with Baker’s methods as a coordinator.
