News Update: The Dallas Cowboys are expected to sign Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro and make a significant free agency splash.

In addition to trying to sign new players, the Dallas Cowboys have a number of offseason decisions to make in order to eventually break through their postseason barrier and contend for the Lombardi Trophy.

The biggest choice Jerry Jones and company will have to make this offseason is whether to keep QB Dak Prescott playing under his current contract, which isn’t ideal for a number of reasons, or extend him early in a move that would free up cap space, trade, or release him — which is highly unlikely given the dead money the team would be stuck with.

Prescott will probably be the target of Jones’s attempt to talk him into signing a team-friendly extension that allows for the salary cap to be implemented in 2024 in exchange for guaranteed money in the form of a signing bonus or later in the deal.

The Dallas Cowboys need to make a lot of decisions in the summer in order to eventually overcome their postseason barrier and compete for the Lombardi Trophy, in addition to trying to sign new players.

The most important decision Jerry Jones and company will have to make this offseason is whether to extend quarterback Dak Prescott early in an attempt to free up cap space, trade, or release him, which is extremely unlikely given the dead money the team would be stuck with. Keeping Prescott playing under his current contract isn’t ideal for a number of reasons.

Jones’s attempt to persuade Prescott to sign a team-friendly extension that permits the salary cap to take effect in 2024 in exchange for guaranteed funds in the form of a signing bonus or later in the deal is likely to be directed toward Prescott.

Knox makes a clear case for Jerry Jones and company to make a big splash this offseason with free agency acquisitions.

Jones is the “premier” defensive tackle in the NFL, yet the Cowboys’ run defense is mediocre.
