Bills GM Makes Definitive Statement on Stefon Diggs’ Future
Wide receiver Stefon Diggs of the Buffalo Bills had a fantastic start to the 2023 campaign before hitting a wall in the middle of it.
Despite a notable decline in output towards the end of the season and a lackluster performance in the postseason, general manager Brandon Beane made it apparent that Diggs is the team’s top receiver going into 2024.
After the team’s January 21 divisional-round loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Beane made it clear to reporters that he still thought Diggs will be a valuable member of the team in 2024.
Brandon Beane: “Remaining Firm on That”
Starting the 2023 season, Diggs appeared like the player he always was after an offseason full of turmoil off the field. The All-Pro receiver had a steep decline the rest of the season after starting the season on pace to accumulate 1,575 yards and 13 touchdowns through the first nine games.
Diggs had the worst stretch of his career without finding the end zone during the final seven games of the regular season, which included the team’s two playoff games. He averaged just 41 receiving yards per game during this time. His misfortunes reached a peak during the team’s playoff loss in the fourth quarter when he let go of a 64-yard pass from quarterback Josh Allen.
Beane stated that despite Diggs’ decline in performance, the team was certain he would be their top receiver again the following year.
“Stef is our number one receiver. According to ESPN, Beane stated, “I firmly believe that, not wavering off of that.” “.. To prevent teams from bracketing him or, you know, locking him down in various ways to take him away, we must continue to have weapons available. They are aware that you will desire him. Stef is still capable of playing, and he would be the first to tell you if he could once more play with that deep ball. Because he is so competitive, he will put in a ton of work throughout the offseason. Even though there are many concerns about Stef’s performance or other factors, I still rank him as the top receiver.
Go Past Stefon Diggs with Question Marks
Although Diggs will be the starting wide receiver for the Bills in 2024, there will probably be some doubt behind him in the lineup. With his rookie contract coming to an end, Gabe Davis, who has played alongside Diggs as the No. 2 for the last two seasons, stated he intends to look into free agency.
Although tight end Dalton Kincaid and receiver Khalil Shakir are two of the Bills’ most potential pass catchers, Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic projected that the team would need to add more talent by 2024.
Fairburn stated, “The Bills need to figure out how to give Allen a more functional wide receiver corps in 2024, regardless of his future.” “On Sunday, Allen’s best plays came during the running game. Although he only threw for one touchdown on 39 tries, he gained 186 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Out of the 39 attempts, 16 were made at or behind the scrimmage line. On passes made behind the line of scrimmage, he went 10 for 21. Allen never had a pass play go more than fifteen yards.
