Former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Michael Lorenzen is still available. After tossing a no-hitter at Citizens Bank Park, the 32-year-old right-hander will be recognized for his time spent with the Phillies in the second half of 2023.
Unfortunately, Lorenzen didn’t do much more for fans to remember after that performance. The right-hander is attracting interest from the Baltimore Orioles, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network. The 101-game winners and American League East winners Orioles may consider using the veteran to fill a spot in their pitching rotation.
They were hoping to acquire an ace-caliber arm in the offseason, but because the majority of them are either not available for trade or are too expensive, they are instead focusing on starting pitchers in the second tier.
Despite losing to the Texas Rangers in the ALDS, Baltimore was among the top teams in baseball last season. As Philadelphia occasionally witnessed, Lorenzen could complete the task. If he signs with the Orioles, they will be hoping that he can revert to the 3.58 ERA he posted in the first half of his career with the Detroit Tigers, where he was also selected to the All-Star team for the first time. With the best season of his career, the former reliever turned starter found himself on a World Series squad.
The Phillies have a respectable starting rotation going into the season, and as the front staff has demonstrated recently, they don’t mind adding an arm at the deadline. But there were some concerns about their own pitching staff, so it was considered that they might be able to add the righty back to the squad to cover some depth. If Lorenzen does wind up departing in free agency to join the Orioles or another team, it wouldn’t necessarily be the biggest loss.
