Following the decision of two offensive coaches who were being pursued by other teams to remain with the Houston Texans and build on their season-long success, it is a great day to be a fan of the team. Quarterback C.J. Stroud will have a good level of continuity from year one to year two with the return of offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik and quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson to the Texans. What could improve upon his second season? Houston might sign a receiver who will go on to become a Hall of Famer.
According to CBS Sports, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would welcome back Mike Evans, a receiver, “especially if Baker Mayfield returns.” Evans is a future Hall of Famer. “But Texas is home for the star No. 1, and old friend Tom Brady would likely put a good word in for C.J. Stroud in Houston, where the AFC South’s up-and-coming contenders are primed to spend big for a deeper playoff push.” After playing college football for Texas A&M, Evans gained 2,499 yards and 17 touchdowns in just two seasons. In 2014, the Buccaneers selected Evans in the first round of the draft.
Before that, he was a football player at Ball High School in Galveston, Texas. In addition to owning the No. 23 pick in the NFL Draft—a higher pick than the No. 27 overall pick they gave to the Arizona Cardinals last year—the Texans are expected to have almost $66 million in salary cap space. Will Anderson Jr., a youthful defensive end acquired from Houston as part of the trade, led the team defensively while Stroud excelled offensively.
The youth movement is genuine, but a good veteran can really step things up. Evans has over 1,000 receiving yards in 10 straight seasons, so it’s hard to imagine the Texans wouldn’t want him and his experience on their squad if the Buccaneers could let him go to look at other alternatives.
