Alabama football is a desirable place for OC candidates to land
There has been increasing worry over the past week that Ryan Grubb, Alabama Football’s new offensive coordinator, would leave before the two have had a chance to get to know one other.
On January 14th, it was revealed that Grubb will be “expected” to travel across the nation with Coach Kalen DeBoer in order to become a member of the Alabama coaching staff. In less than three weeks, he’s been the focus of speculations that connect him to the NFL’s open offensive coordinator position with the Seattle Seahawks.
Grubb’s tenure as the Washington Huskies’ offensive coordinator gave him familiarity with the Seattle area, so it’s not shocking that he’s being considered for the job.
Where would DeBoer and Alabama turn on the offensive end of the ball if he left?
Given the timing of this announcement, they would undoubtedly be in a tight spot, but the position’s appeal may provide the Tide with more options than many anticipate.
Naturally, Alabama is one of the most well-known and identifiable brands in sports, and head coach Nick Saban enjoys great popularity due to the team’s past performance and current success.
Having successful skill position coaches on staff is also a benefit, as is Kalen DeBoer’s history of building strong offenses. The work of an offensive coordinator would be made simpler and more pleasurable by having outstanding coaches like wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard and running backs coach Robert Gillespie.
And lastly, and perhaps most crucially, Alabama has incredible offensive talent. With the most remarkable physical attributes of any college football quarterback, Jalen Milroe just needs the appropriate coaching to develop into a player of a generation. Austin Mack, Dylan Lonergan, and Ty Simpson are all excellent quarterbacks in their own right and stand behind him. All three of them, in my opinion, have the potential to succeed as early as this autumn and begin at the Power Five level.
Leading the pack in the running back room are sophomore Justice Haynes and junior Jam Miller. After suffering some big losses, Alabama’s new receiving corps bounced back with 5-star Ryan Williams and Washington transfer Germie Bernard. Despite the NFL Draft and the departures from the transfer site, there is optimistic conjecture that this group may be superior to the 2023 group.
Finally, there is a lot of promise with Alabama’s offensive line. The interior line might be the finest in the country, but it is trying to lock down its tackle positions. The arrival of former Washington big Parker Brailsford and the return of guards Tyler Booker and Jaeden Roberts should help the Crimson Tide become a formidable force on the floor.
It would be an incredible chance for any top offensive coordinator who has faith in his talents to lead this team. If the OC position becomes available again, Bama supporters would have to put their belief in Coach DeBoer because he seems to have made wise choices and excellent hiring at every turn.
To restate, if Ryan Grubb decided to enter the NFL, Alabama would undoubtedly suffer a loss. He is not only an excellent offensive coordinator, but he also has good working ties with Coach DeBoer and a number of other staff members.
Additionally, he has already started fostering relationships with a number of Bama’s recruiting targets as well as the current team. It would be uncomfortable to have to replace Grubb so soon before spring practice, and it would be bad for optics and chemistry.
If Alabama football supporters are searching for reasons to be upbeat, national media analysts have reported that Grubb has not even conducted an interview for the Seahawks position and was actively recruiting for the Tide as recently as last week.
Remember not to write him off too soon, and know that Kalen DeBoer can certainly find a worthy successor if needed.
