Good News: Texas Rangers Confirm The Signing Of Three Experienced Stars

Three Signed To Minor League Deals By Rangers
Three players have signed minor league contracts, the Rangers announced. Non-roster invitees Chasen Shreve, Danny Duffy, and José Godoy, a left-hander, will be at MLB camp. The previously reported deal between Texas and DJ Peters was confirmed, despite the fact that the former outfielder and current pitcher was not invited to the big league Spring Training.

Each of the three recent arrivals from Texas has MLB experience. Out of the three, only Shreve made an appearance in the major leagues a year ago. The 33-year-old played for both the Reds and Tigers throughout the season. After being signed to a minor league contract by Detroit for the offseason, he joined the organization and played in 47 games. Despite having an unimpressive 4.79 ERA over 41 1/3 innings, Shreve struck out a respectable 23.3% of opponents while walking less often than the average 6.7% of them.

Detroit had wanted to attract attention from trade parties for the seasoned reliever. They released him to give controllable bullpen arms a couple more innings when the deadline passed without a taker. Shreve stuck with the Reds for three more games, but he was unable to establish a long-term presence in the Cincinnati relief organization. September saw his release.

Shreve has played for seven different teams throughout his ten major league seasons, appearing in portions of them campaigns. In Arlington, where there is a bias toward the right side of the bullpen, he will try to get an eighth. The only other southpaw committed to a relief corps that might also feature rookies Antoine Kelly and Jake Latz, as well as swingman Cody Bradford. Over the previous four seasons, Shreve has kept left-handed hitters to a very respectable batting line of.222/.295/.403. Blake Taylor, a former Astro, is also a minor league pickup and is in camp.

Duffy returns to the team for what will be his second consecutive season with the Rangers. A year ago, the veteran starter for the Royals signed a minor league contract with Texas. That followed a disastrous 18 months due to arm injuries. A flexor strain occurred to Duffy in the middle of the 2021 campaign. Several injuries forced him to have surgery after the season and eventually cost him the entire 22nd season.

In June of last year, the 35-year-old was able to return to a mound. He was assigned to Double-A Frisco and only used the bullpen to pitch. Over 31 1/3 innings, Duffy recorded a 2.30 ERA while striking out 28.3% of batters he faced. The extended rest obviously had a negative impact on his control because at Double-A, he walked an unacceptable 15.2% of batters. In 4 1/3 frames of Triple-A play, he handed out eight more free passes. The Rangers were impressed enough with his form to give him another opportunity during Spring Training, hoping that as he continues to heal from his injuries, he can refine his command. Since July 16, 2021, when he made his last start as a Royal, Duffy has not appeared in an MLB game.

Godoy, 29, is a depth catcher with 26 major league games under his belt. He divided his time between the Twins, Pirates, and Mariners. The left-handed batter has spent portions of four Triple-A seasons with a line of.271/.329/.404. Godoy played with the Yankees and Orioles during the 23 season, but he only made 36 appearances in the major leagues.
