Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs has a shocking message for teams that believe he is a slow runner.
When the Kansas City Chiefs play the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl on Sunday, as they have in almost every game since they selected quarterback Patrick Mahomes, they will depend on him to win.
Every year that Mahomes has started for the Chiefs in Kansas City, the team has advanced to the AFC Championship. He has led the Chiefs to the big game four times in the last five seasons and is playing for his third Super Bowl ring on Sunday.
Since Tom Brady, the NFL has not seen such magnificence as Mahomes, and already, some have crowned the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs as the “greatest of all time.”
Although Patrick Mahomes has a long way to go before quarterback can join Brady in the Super Bowl, he brings a moxie and attitude to the game that is revolutionizing the NFL. Brady owns seven Super Bowl rings.
Teams are smitten with USC quarterback Caleb Williams because of his distinctive style. He is the closest thing to Mahomes in terms of maneuvering in the pocket, dodging sacks, stretching plays with his legs, and connecting with receivers on seemingly absurd passes that are executed flawlessly for those exceptional athletes.
The Brady vs. Mahomes debate turns into a challenging conversation. We can only wait to see if Mahomes will surpass Brady in the number of Super Bowl rings he has earned because he still has a lot of football left to play. But from the perspective of generational talent alone? Mahomes is the most distinctive quarterback we have ever seen at the position, even if Brady was the greatest pocket passer of all time.
With even more tools, Patrick Mahomes appears to possess the same level of mental acuity. Mahomes has a larger arm. Brady is smaller than him and he is speedier. Indeed, it is evident that 99% of NFL quarterbacks arrive in the league with a more polished appearance than Brady, who seemed at the 2000 Indianapolis Scouting Combine like a father of three who had spent too much time drinking and smoking on his speedboat. However, the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs employs his physical tools in a way that we have never seen in a player.

Even while it might take some time for Mahomes to overtake Brady, it’s evident from watching the NFL and the prospects coming out of college that teams are increasingly prioritizing mobile quarterbacks who can extend plays with their legs over pocket passers.

Mahomes will never be mistaken for a runner like, say, Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens. He did, however, quip that he doesn’t receive enough credit for that aspect of his skill.
Mahomes remarked, “I’ve told a lot of people I’m faster than people think.” “People assume I’m slow because I don’t run well, but I move a little bit better than they think. Maybe one day I’ll get a spy.” That is my objective. I’ll know I made it if I get a spy.”
Against the Los Angeles Chargers, Patrick Mahomes has two career games with 50 or more yards rushing. When he heard Mahomes asking for a defensive spy, linebacker Drue Tranquill—who had spent four seasons with the Chargers—said, “We didn’t spy him for four years and we paid the price.”
The Kansas City Chiefs star’s dual-threat skill was then further explained by Tranquil.
“Therefore, [Mahomes] is the best player in the world.” The fact that he was able to convert on third-and-20 with his legs and on third-and-8 down there to end the game, even on a night when he threw two or three picks, speaks to the tenacity and toughness of the entire offensive line as well as the faith this team has in Mahomes to finish the job.
The Chiefs quarterback was questioned about his rushing style and the opinion of opposing teams that he isn’t very fast or awkward before the Super Bowl game against the 49ers.
“I think I’ve gotten faster and better at running form since I joined the NFL, but people kind of think I’m slow because it doesn’t look the prettiest, which I think is kind of deceptive,” Mahomes stated.
“I think the defense sometimes takes bad angles because they believe they will catch me faster than I do. Maybe that’s how I run; I go in a different direction than everyone else.”
He definitely didn’t hold back.
