Mike Caldwell joins the Raiders’ coaching staff
He was the defensive coordinator for Jacksonville.
Mike Caldwell was hired by the new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, Antonio Pierce, to serve as their linebackers coach and coordinator of the run game, as per NFL Media.
In the weeks since Pierce was hired, Caldwell has been associated with the Raiders. If Caldwell were to land a head coaching position, he was reportedly considered as a replacement for defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.
Before moving to Las Vegas, Caldwell had interviews for other positions as defensive coordinators. In the event that Graham gets hired as a head coach in the future, Caldwell is a legitimate contender to replace him on Pierce’s staff.
Following the season, Caldwell lost his job as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive coordinator. 52-year-old Caldwell played two seasons in Jacksonville. Since 2008, he has worked as an assistant coach in the NFL, spending time with the Jets, Philadelphia, Arizona, and Tampa Bay before moving to Jacksonville.
In Las Vegas, he takes Pierce’s place as the linebackers coach. Caldwell, like Pierce and a number of his appointments, was formerly a player. He played linebacker for six different clubs from 1993 to 2003.
