Raptors make a deadline move for a well-known Canadian resident.
The Toronto Raptors are still accumulating homegrown talent.
The Raptors are acquiring big man Kelly Olynyk in a trade with the Utah Jazz, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN on Thursday. In the transaction, the Jazz acquire guard Kira Lewis, forward Otto Porter, and a 2024 first-round lottery pick; Toronto also receives guard Ochai Agbaji.
Notably, Olynyk, 32, a past lottery selection, is a Toronto native. In Utah this season, he was averaging 8.1 points per game on career-best shooting splits of 56/43/84. Olynyk is a welcome veteran addition to the rebuilding Raptors, even though he might not play as much as he did for the youthful Jazz. Toronto also acquired Agbaji, a 23-year-old former Kansas champion.
Numerous trade parties had expressed interest in Olynyk, including some of his former teams. However, he will now be the most recent native of Canada to sign with the league’s lone NBA franchise.
