Jesse Chavez joins the White Sox in a minor league contract
Jesse Chavez will join the White Sox during spring training.
Jesse Chavez, a former reliever with the Atlanta Braves, has moved. Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Chavez has accepted a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox. Chavez’s contract reportedly includes an invitation to major league Spring Training.
In a recent interview with MLB Network Radio, 40-year-old Chavez stated that the 2024 season will probably be his last. He was searching for one final chance when he uploaded videos of himself hurling on Instagram.
Before being hit in the shin by a line ball hit by Miguel Cabrera in Detroit on June 14, Chavez was a key member of the Braves bullpen in the early going of the previous season. He spent three months on the injured list as a result, but he eventually made five more appearances before the season ended. But the Braves did not include him on their Division Series roster.
During the previous season, Chavez played in 36 games for Atlanta, recording 34 2/3 innings with a 3.05 FIP and 1.56 ERA. He has played for the Braves for portions of the previous three seasons, including two stints in 2022. Because of this, you can never rule out a reunion, but it is hard to see where he would fit in given how much time the Braves spent this winter replenishing their bullpen. Conversely, the White Sox don’t currently have a strong bullpen, therefore Chavez probably has a good chance of making the Opening Day roster.
