With Tom Telesco taking over as general manager and a senior coaching staff brought in to support head coach Antonio Pierce, the Las Vegas Raiders are in the midst of their offseason. Right now, the front office is concentrated on strengthening the roster, with quarterback being a top priority.
Jimmy Garoppolo proved to be a bad investment in 2023, and it is unlikely that he will be kept on the field. Luckily for Las Vegas, there will be some interesting options available to choose the starting quarterback for the upcoming season in both the NFL free agency and the 2024 Draft.
The Raiders could continue to play their best internal option, but doing so would be a huge risk for a team that hasn’t won a postseason game since 2002. Pierce so admits that there will be fierce competition at quarterback from Las Vegas.
Before Super Bowl LVIII, Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce stated the team will sign a quarterback this offseason in an interview with Vic Tafur of The Athletic. During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show a few weeks after formally being named the full-time head coach in Las Vegas, Pierce also provided insight into quarterback Aidan O’Connell.
I’m all for competition, so I believe Aidan O’Connell put himself in a situation where anyone we bring in, he should compete. That would sort itself out. However, as the season progressed, I felt Aidan O’Connell did a fantastic job of managing the game, looking after the football, and carrying out our requests. .. We have now made some adjustments to the offensive end of the ball. As you are aware, we plan to include a quarterback in some manner and to allow those players compete.
Even though the coaching staff has given O’Connell some credit, he didn’t exactly play well in his limited role. The rookie quarterback for the Raiders completed just 61.51 percent of his passes and averaged 6.55 yards per attempt in his final nine starts, earning an 86.1 QB rating.

Taylor has an 88.9 QB rating and a 64.9 percent completion percentage over his last 14 games. Additionally, he remains a reasonably strong athlete, offering Las Vegas some dual-threat potential as quarterback.
J.J. McCarthy (NFL Draft): If Las Vegas wants J.J. McCarthy, they may need to use their first selection to acquire him, despite the growing consensus that he will be selected in the first round. McCarthy is predicted to wow teams in interviews at the NFL Combine. Jim Harbaugh has labeled McCarthy the finest quarterback prospect in the 2024 class. You can pretty much count on McCarthy to start Week 1 if the Raiders use their first-round selection on him.
Spencer Rattler (NFL Draft): It would be wiser for Las Vegas to hold off on selecting a quarterback until Day 2 if McCarthy isn’t rated in the top-15. Despite his poor performance at South Carolina and some worries about his immaturity, Spencer Rattler is among the most physically gifted prospects that Las Vegas will have access to on Day 2. The Raiders coaching staff might give him a chance to challenge O’Connell for the starting job, even if only as a bit of a project.
