Michigan Takes Away Texans’ Assistant Coach Stephen Adegoke
In 2024, a different coach will not be rejoining the Houston Texans. Stephen Adegoke, the coach of the Texans’ safeties, is being hired by the University of Michigan to replace Sherrone Moore as their secondary coach, according to sources from KPRC2 News. Adegoke, 29, formerly served as the defensive quality control coach for the San Francisco 49ers before spending one season with the Texans under head coach DeMeco Ryans. Adegoke worked as a defensive analyst for Jim Harbaugh at Michigan in 2021 before joining the NFL. He also spent two seasons, starting in 2019, as a graduate assistant at Florida.
With Adegoke’s assistance, the Texans’ pass coverage ranking was 23rd. During the regular season, Houston’s secondary recorded 16 interceptions, with former first-round choice Derek Stingley Jr. leading the club with five. Adegoke spent much of his time with Jalen Pitre and Jimmie Ward as the safeties coach. After joining Ryans from San Francisco, Ward was productive while healthy, but he did miss the final three games due to an injury that ended his season. Pitre, who was in the top 10 for tackles in his rookie season, declined in coverage and suffered a decrease in the number of reps he received in the new defensive alignment. Adegoke, a former collegiate defensive back, played two years at the junior college level for San Diego Mesa from 2014–15 before spending three seasons with Mississippi State (2016–18). He played in 16 games during his three seasons with the Bulldogs, recording 14 tackles, three passes defended, one interception, and one forced fumble.
Adegoke will take over in Ann Arbor for Steve Clinkscale, who left to work for the Chargers when Harbaugh was hired. He joins a group of veteran NFL assistants to John Harbaugh on the coaching staff, which includes Don “Wink” Martindale, a longtime defensive coordinator who worked under Harbaugh with the Baltimore Ravens. Since the end of the season, the Texans have lost two of their coaches. Defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire amicably left Houston to take a position as defensive line coach with the Cleveland Browns after the team lost 34-10 to Baltimore in the AFC Divisional Round.
