Yankees Gain Depth After Winning Pitcher for the Phillies
The New York Yankees are coming into this new season with high hopes after having one of their worst seasons in recent memory in 2023.
The players, coaching staff, and front office have all talked about the team’s poor performance and are eager to move on. To make that happen, upgrades were needed, and they were mostly successful in achieving this objective. They should have a far greater chance of contending in the heavy American League with players like Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo, Marcus Stroman, and others. But given that injuries have already begun to appear, there are still some worries about this team, particularly with regard to the bullpen. With Lou Trevino on the 60-day injured list, Tommy Kahnle mending from a shoulder injury, and Scott Effross probably missing half the season, the Yankees had to take action to add more pitching to their roster.
According to their own social media account, New York was able to accomplish that by claiming McKinley Moore off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies. Trevino was placed on the injured list, and the right-hander was added to the 40-man roster.
The Chicago White Sox selected Moore, a 25-year-old, in the 14th round of the draft. Prior to making his Major League debut with the Phillies last year, he had played most of his career in the minor leagues.
Despite his miserable performance in 3 1/3 innings thrown, where he gave up seven earned runs on five hits, he showed potential in the minors, where he had a career ERA of 3.92 in 118 appearances and one start throughout his four professional seasons. Moore is definitely a depth piece that the Yankees can employ if injuries start to pile up again, even though it’s unlikely that he will play a significant role for them this season.
