Alabama secured its second transfer portal addition on Monday as former Washington tight end Josh Cuevas committed to the team. This announcement came in an X post, joining safety Keon Sabb as the two players added to Alabama through the portal on that day.
Having entered the transfer portal on February 5, Cuevas, with two years of college eligibility remaining, spent the 2023 season at Washington after his initial two seasons at Cal Poly in 2021 and 2022. Standing at 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 239 pounds, Cuevas played 15 games last season for Washington, making notable contributions such as catching four passes for 164 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown in the season opener against Boise State, and a 57-yard reception against Arizona.
A Los Angeles native, Cuevas, unranked by 247 Sports out of Campbell Hall School, earned recognition as a third-team All-Big Sky selection during his redshirt freshman year at Cal Poly in 2022.
Cuevas’s move to Alabama reunites him with former Huskies coach Kalen DeBoer, now the head coach at Alabama, and former UW tight ends coach Nick Sheridan, who serves as Alabama’s offensive coordinator. This transfer aligns with other players, including quarterback Austin Mack, center Parker Brailsford, and wide receiver Germie Bernard, following DeBoer and Sheridan from Seattle to Alabama.
Alabama’s tight end room already featured returning seniors CJ Dippre and Robbie Ouzts, although third-year Amari Niblack departed to Texas through the portal last month. Danny Lewis and Ty Lockwood are the other two returning players, with Caleb Odom and Jay Lindsey as incoming freshmen.
With Cuevas’s addition, Alabama now boasts eight transfer portal acquisitions for the offseason, ranking them 11th nationally in 247 Sports’ portal rankings.
