The Saints have brought in former Raiders General Manager, Dave Ziegler, as an advisor until the 2024 draft, following his dismissal alongside head coach Josh McDaniels from the Raiders. This temporary arrangement is intended to provide the Saints with Ziegler’s seasoned insights in critical personnel decisions during the upcoming weeks, especially as they navigate cap management and free agency.
Ziegler, who began his executive career with the Broncos in 2010, worked his way up to become the player personnel director with the Patriots in 2021 before taking on the role of GM with the Raiders. However, his tenure in Vegas did not unfold as expected, with a 14-20 record and challenges reminiscent of the ‘Patriot Way,’ incorporating former Patriots players like quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
In the aftermath of the coaching and management changes in the Raiders, the team is faced with the task of finding a replacement for Garoppolo, who is set to be released due to a PED suspension. The Saints, on the other hand, are gearing up for a crucial offseason, involving decisions on restructures, extensions, and potential releases of veterans, such as wideout Michael Thomas. The team aims to rebuild through free agency and the draft, with hopes of improving on their combined 16-18 record under head coach Dennis Allen.
Ziegler’s role as an advisor in New Orleans during this period could influence his future opportunities in executive positions, either with the Saints or elsewhere in the NFL, depending on how the draft and subsequent decisions unfold.
