The New Orleans Saints are reportedly planning to part ways with veteran safety Marcus Maye as the new league year begins. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, Maye, who joined the team in the 2022 offseason, is set to be released, potentially saving around $1.19 million in cap space if done immediately. While a post-June 1 designation could yield more significant savings of $7.2 million, there’s no official confirmation yet.
Maye’s tenure with the Saints has been hampered by injuries, limiting his participation to 17 games over two seasons. Additionally, he faced a 3-game suspension at the beginning of the 2023 season. During his time in New Orleans, Maye recorded 97 total tackles, two interceptions, and one sack.
Looking ahead, the Saints may target the re-signing of Johnathan Abram and Lonnie Johnson, both of whom were part of the team in the previous season. The potential release of Maye also suggests a focus on the safety position in the upcoming draft, making the months leading up to the draft a crucial period for the team’s strategic planning.
