Sixers cut big man Kenneth Lofton, Jr. after two seasons.
Despite the big man performing admirably for the Blue Coats, Kenneth Lofton, Jr. was dismissed by the Sixers on Friday.
Kenneth Lofton, Jr., a two-way big man, was waived by the Sixers on Friday.
On December 23, Lofton, who had previously been waived by the Memphis Grizzlies, agreed to a two-way deal with the Sixers. In ten games for the Delaware Blue Coats, he has been putting up enormous numbers: 27.2 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per 29.8 minutes on average. Lofton never played a significant role for the Sixers, a team beset by injuries and in desperate need of a big man.
As a member of the Memphis Hustle last season, the 21-year-old won G League Rookie of the Year. At the end of the regular season, he was able to play with the Grizzlies and even scored 42 points in one of their games thanks to that. Although injuries have destroyed Memphis’ roster even more than they have the Sixers, Lofton was unable to break into Memphis’ starting lineup this year.
It will be interesting to see the Sixers’ future developments. After the team’s 10-day deal with Darius Bazley expired, the combo big returned to Delaware. Accordingly, the Sixers currently have two regular roster spaces available in addition to one open two-way spot.
Ricky Council IV appears to be a candidate to have his two-way contract changed to a conventional contract after he produced an incredible dunk in the team’s victory over the Hornets on Friday. In the event that it does, Terquavion Smith will continue to hold the other of the team’s two open two-way contracts.
After Joel Embiid’s injury, the Sixers could still use another big man, but there isn’t much of a market for them. We’ll see what tricks Daryl Morey has planned.
