Four players are reassigned by the Yankees as the spring training roster is announced.
The Yankees have started moving players to the minor levels and assembling information in preparation for the 2024 season, even while spring training is already under way. The Yankees made a lot of decisions before and after their defeat to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, including getting ready to send a number of prospects to Triple-A and minor league camp.
Yankees Select Two Players to Be Sent to Triple-
A Luis Gil:
Despite having been sidelined for a few years, Luis Gil is still seen highly by the Yankees. Gil, who is currently 25 years old, only appeared in four innings for Low-A Tampa in 2023. In 2022, he pitched four innings with the major league team and 21.2 innings for Triple-A, but he had trouble.
Gil is just attempting to lower his walk rate and keep up his strikeout rate even if his velocity is still quite high. His development has been hampered by his lack of control, and the injuries haven’t helped either. In Triple-A, the Yankees will continue to work on him in the hopes that he can break through the bullpen or be used as a spot starter.
Yoendrys Gomez
The Yankees sent Yoendrys Gomez to Triple-A in addition to Gil. Last season, the 24-year-old starter threw two innings with the Yankees and 65.1 innings in Double-A. This spring, he threw for the Yankees for less than an inning and hosted a 3.58 ERA with Somerset. He obviously needs more time to mature, and the Bombers will return him to the minors in order to fulfill that requirement.
Two players were reassigned by the Yankees to the Minor League Camp Chase Hampton.
Chase Hampton,
a pitcher with a deadly fastball and a vicious pitch mix, is one of the Yankees’ best prospects.
In his one spring training inning against the Tampa Bay Rays, the 22-year-old gave up one hit and struck out two batters. Hampton possesses genuine talent and has the potential to be a main starter in the future. Between Hudson Valley and Double-A last season, he pitched more than 100 innings. Hampton is well-known for his high strikeout totals and low walk rates, which the Yankees will find to be a wonderful mix as they strengthen their rotation going forward.
Art Warren:
The Yankees sent Art Warren to minor league camp, much like they did with Hampton. A 30-year-old bullpen component, Warren pitched 36 innings in 2022 for the Cincinnati Reds. With a career 4.19 ERA through 62.1 innings, Warren is not expected to have much of an impact on the MLB in the near future. But as a safety measure, the Bombers want to hold onto as many relief pitchers as possible in the minor leagues.
