Latest Texas News: 3 Texas players picked in first round in recent mock draft

In a recent mock draft, three Texas players were selected in the first round.
Adonai Mitchell and Xavier Worthy, two wide receivers for Texas football, may stand out among the former Longhorns chosen in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Last week in Indianapolis, IN, several Texas football players made impressive impressions at the 2024 NFL Combine. The 40-yard dash times of Texas wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell last weekend in Indianapolis stole the show.

Mitchell’s official 40-yard sprint performance of 4.35 seconds raised heads. In other tests, he did well in the broad jump and vertical leap, leading all wide receivers with an 11-foot-4 leap.

In the most recent CBS Sports mock draft, Texas football wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell are selected in the first round.
However, Worthy was the one who truly got the attention of football fans across. Worthy officially timed in at 4.21 seconds, shattering the record held by former Washington Huskies wide receiver John Ross.

Worthy was among the top five wideouts in both the vertical and broad jumps.

Defensive tackle Byron Murphy II was among the former Longhorns who excelled at the combine last week, along with Mitchell and Worthy. Murphy, the Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year, posted an official 40-yard sprint time of 4.87 seconds at the combine, placing him among the fastest defensive linemen.

All three of the former Longhorns, Mitchell, Worthy, and Murphy, have had their value rise in anticipation of the 2024 NFL Draft as a result of their impressive combine performances.

This trio of Longhorns’ enhanced draft stock was taken into account in CBS Sports’ post-combine 2024 NFL Mock Draft. In the first round of the most recent mock draft conducted by Kyle Stackpole of CBS Sports, Mitchell, Worthy, and Mitchell were also chosen.

In this CBS Sports mock draft, Murphy was the first Longhorn to go undrafted. Stackpole predicted that the Jacksonville Jaguars would take him with the 17th overall pick in the first round. It seems like Murphy has solidified his draft value coming out of the combine in the middle of the first round.

In this mock draft, Mitchell was the second Longhorn predicted to go in the first round, going 26th overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 10-year veteran wide out Mitchell fills in for veteran wide receiver Mike Evans, who is expected to take his skills elsewhere this offseason.

Last but not least, Worthy was selected by the Buffalo Bills 28th overall in the first round thanks to the bump in his stock that came from a solid combine performance. According to Stackpole, Worthy was selected in the first round of his mock draft because he broke the “NFL Combine record in the 40-yard dash automatically”.

Since defensive backs Michael Griffin and Aaron Ross were both selected in the top 20 of the 2007 NFL Draft, there is a good potential that several Texas players will be chosen in the first round.

Considered the most likely Longhorns to be selected in the first round are Worthy, Mitchell, and Murphy due to their exceptional combine performances. However, Texas also boasts defensive lineman T’Vondre Sweat and tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders who could make it into the first round.

It’s evident that the perception that the Longhorns haven’t produced elite players in the previous ten to fifteen years is one that is destroyed this offseason. Out of all the Big 12 teams taken in this draft, Texas will have the most players. In the 2024 draft, it might have the most first-round picks of any Big 12 team.
