elite QB Jayden Daniels of LSU Thinking of the Saints
According to Ryan Fowler of the Bleacher Report, the New Orleans Saints appear interested in LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels after meeting with him at the NFL Scouting Combine. However, given that the Heisman Trophy winner appears to be set for meetings with the Patriots, Vikings, Giants, and Commanders, he is undoubtedly being scouted by someone.
Everyone ought to desire Daniels Jayden
Daniels had an outstanding collegiate football season in 2023, and every team need to be watching him. In addition to his incredible 3,812 passing yards which resulted in 40 touchdowns, he also had 1,134 rushing yards which resulted in 10 touchdowns of his own. In contrast to LSU’s Joe Burrow, the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner, he finished each game with 412.2 total yards as opposed to Burrow’s 402.6. In addition, he earned the best passing efficiency rating in FBS history (208.0) compared to Burrow’s 202.0.
But it doesn’t appear like CBS Sports believes the LSU quarterback is a good fit for the Saints. The top five teams that are most likely to sign him before the Saints have an opportunity are the Giants, Patriots, Raiders, Commanders, and Falcons, according to the football news site. Naturally, the Saints have already made a commitment to Derek Carr, and they have Taysom Hill as a potent backup option if they need him.
Ever since Drew Brees left the Saints in 2021, the quarterback position has been problematic for the organization. It was frequently said that the Saints were the NFC South’s team to beat while he was in charge. It would be difficult to fill the enormous void that his departure created.
Since Jameis Winston was a player that was already on the club, he should be able to finish the job. However, there seems to be a problem with him. The Saints had to search elsewhere as a result.
It appeared as though Taysom Hill was being prepared to take over for Brees while he was still with the team. When they needed a trick play, they could always count on him to deliver one of his explosive plays. He transformed a yard or two into fifteen or twenty with ease. Why then didn’t he take over at quarterback?
Dennis Allen took over for Sean Payton as the dynamic duo of Drew Brees and Sean Payton faded into yesterday’s news, but who would take Brees’ place? The Saints have gone through phases of Trevor Siemian, Ian Book, and Andy Dalton, but until Derek Carr arrived, none of them were really successful.
For the Saints, what would Jayden Daniels do?
The Saints need to find a backup quarterback in case Jameis Winston decides to explore his free agency possibilities. Although Jayden Daniels isn’t particularly aiming to pursue that role, even Heisman Trophy winners occasionally have to start someplace. Winston even has his 2013 Heisman Trophy on display on his mantel.
Carr would have fierce competition if the Saints were able to sign Daniels in any fashion. The fans would love to see Daniels become the Saints’ next Drew Brees if he could handle the expectations of the NFL and perform as well as he did in college. Naturally, there remains a lot of trust in Carr’s abilities. Thus, the team may benefit from a healthy rivalry between an accomplished quarterback and a star player right out of college.
The Saints will need to move up from their current #14 pick in the draft order if they are serious about Daniels. However, they had multiple meetings with him before the combine, and that may be telling us something.
