Breaking: Falcons Sign Georgia Tight End, Former 49ers
After making a big impact by signing former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins to a contract, the Atlanta Falcons swiftly turned their focus to providing him with assistance.
Agent Alex Essex reports that tight end Charlie Woerner and Atlanta have reached an agreement on a $12 million, three-year contract. Woerner, a native of Tiger, Georgia, attended the University of Georgia from 2016 to 2019 before the San Francisco 49ers selected him in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
During his four seasons with the 49ers, the 26-year-old Woerner participated in 65 games and made seven starts. Throughout his career, he caught 11 passes for 120 yards on 15 targets. Despite playing a career-high 29 percent of San Francisco’s offensive snaps last season, Woerner caught all three of his targets for 32 yards.
Having played in at least 70% of the 49ers’ special teams snaps over the previous three years, Woerner has established himself as a formidable blocker and special teams player. The 6-5, 241-pound Woerner recorded 10 tackles in 2023 and 25 takedowns in total, 17 of which came from single efforts.
At the moment, John FitzPatrick, Tucker Fisk, and Kyle Pitts make up Atlanta’s tight ends room. Like Woerner, FitzPatrick and Fisk developed a reputation as block-first players.
In addition to the homecoming element, Woerner’s decision to sign with the Falcons has a family connection because Atlanta selected his uncle Scott in the third round of the 1981 draft. The younger Woerner now gets to play an unsung part on head coach Raheem Morris’s first team while representing his home state.
