One of the best players on the special teams for the Baltimore Ravens is leaving. Reportedly, linebacker Del’Shawn Phillips and the Houston Texans reached an agreement on a one-year contract. After playing collegiately at Illinois, Phillips was an undrafted rookie who went on to become a standout special teams player for the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, and Ravens.
The 27-year-old participated in 7% of the team’s defensive plays and over 80% of Baltimore’s special teams plays in 2023, which is the highest percentage of any player.
During his two seasons as a player, Phillips had 33 appearances, totaling 29 tackles and one forced fumble. The former Fighting Illini had his greatest season in 2021, playing a career-high 160 plays and recording a career-best 31 tackles and a sack.
In the “legal tampering period” leading up to Wednesday, the start of the NFL’s new league year, Phillips joins a Texans club that is becoming better. Along with running back Gus Edwards, safety Geno Stone, wide receiver Devin Duvernay, lineman John Simpson, and cornerback Ronald Darby, Phillips becomes the sixth Raven to depart via free agency since Monday.
