Eagles Sign Experienced Linebacker
The Philadelphia Eagles’ acquisition of star running back Saquon Barkley this week marked a significant step toward their recovery from their appalling end to the 2023 campaign.
However, defense was their main weakness last season, particularly in the closing stages when they dropped five of their final six regular-season games, and they clearly need to improve there.
According to the NFL’s official Twitter account, they filled one of those requirements on Thursday by agreeing to sign linebacker Devin White to a $7.5 million, one-year contract.
After being humiliated by the Tampa Bay Bucs in the playoffs, White should be a huge asset at linebacker, which is maybe Philly’s biggest need.
He recorded over 100 total tackles three times and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2021 during his five seasons with the Buccaneers.
Despite missing three games, he still finished 2023 with 83 tackles (49 solo), nine quarterback hits, six passes defended, five tackles for loss, and two interceptions. His stats were a little lower than usual.
The Eagles made another significant splash in free agency earlier this week when they signed pass rusher Bryce Huff, but there are rumors that outside linebacker Haason Reddick may be headed out.
In 2024, he will begin the last year of his deal. Given their recent lavish spending spree on Barkley and Huff, there is conjecture that they may trade him.
Nevertheless, the Eagles could see a dramatic improvement in their defense this autumn, particularly with Vic Fangio taking over as their defensive coordinator.
