On Monday, nickel cornerback Taron Johnson of the Buffalo Bills inked a three-year contract deal that will keep him with the team until the 2027 campaign.
Johnson, 27, was about to start the last season of a three-year contract that he signed in 2021. He had just returned from his first All-Pro selection. After attending Weber State, he was chosen by Buffalo in the fourth round of the 2018 draft, and he has been a starter since 2020.
The contract gives the Bills some consistency in their secondary, which will undergo a significant overhaul.
Two weeks ago, starting safety Micah Hyde and starting cornerback Tre’Davious White were cut, and starting safety Jordan Poyer is thinking about retiring. Since 2017, the three of them had been a unit.
Johnson was credited with 98 tackles, three forced fumbles (career highs), and a sack during the previous campaign. On October 15, he produced a career-high 15 tackles and broke up a pass in the end zone on the final play of a 14-9 victory over the New York Giants. It was his best game of the season.
In 88 career games, including 67 starts, he has four interceptions, seven forced fumbles, and seven sacks overall.
