Former quarterback Jameis Winston of the Saints discusses why he chose to play for the Browns.
The New Orleans Saints have officially bid farewell to Jameis Winston, and they must now look for a new backup quarterback and team captain.
Former quarterback Jameis Winston of the New Orleans Saints intends to sign a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns in order to serve as Deshaun Watson’s backup. The $4 million guaranteed portion of the deal may increase to $8.7 million based on Winston’s bonus. The loss of both a strong backup quarterback and a leader in the locker room is significant for the Saints. The Saints will now be searching for Winston’s replacement.
For the last four seasons, Jameis Winston has been a member of the Saints. During those seasons, he started ten games and finished 6-4. Despite having few opportunities, he displayed both positive and negative traits while playing. 2,367 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions were all thrown by him. Winston didn’t have particularly great on-field performance, but it will be difficult to take his place as the team’s leader.
It’s unclear if the Saints intended to sign Winston for an additional season. So far, there’s been no sign that they’re attempting to work things out with him. At the conclusion of the previous season, there was a disagreement between Winston and the group. Week 18 against the Atlanta Falcons saw Winston fake a kneel and pass it to Jamaal Williams, who increased the huge advantage with a touchdown. He and Dennis Allen were strained as a result, which might have resulted in his release.
It’s also quite plausible that the Saints let Winston depart in order to give him a chance to start, since it didn’t appear like he would get one in New Orleans.
Jameis Winston and the Browns reach a one-year agreement.
Winston is prepared for the fresh start Cleveland has in store for him. “Having the opportunity to work with Deshaun (Watson) and help him be the best he can possibly be, is my main mission,” Winston said in a conversation with Josina Anderson. Winston has high expectations despite knowing going into the season that he will be the backup. He said, “In the end, I want to win some Super Bowls, and this Cleveland team looks like they can do it,” during that conversation. Winston will always be confident in himself, that much is certain.
From an on-field perspective, Jameis Winston’s disappointing experience in New Orleans will still have a negative impact on the team when he leaves for the Cleveland Browns in free agency. While everyone waits to see if Winston can establish his mettle in Cleveland and elsewhere, the Saints need to find another backup.
