Christian Barmore and the Patriots have begun contract extension negotiations, according to Jerod Mayo.
This year marks the defensive tackle’s last year under his rookie deal.
This offseason, the New England Patriots have made it their mission to hold onto talent, and it doesn’t appear that they will stop. Christian Barmore, a defensive tackle who will soon begin the last year of his rookie deal, is among the next players the team is hunting for.
The Patriots and Barmore have actually already discussed extending their collaboration until 2024. That much was revealed on Monday morning by head coach Jerod Mayo.
Something concerning Barmore. At the NFL annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, Mayo stated at the coaches’ breakfast, “He’s one of those players—he’s developed here.”
“Obviously, there were some questions after college. His capacity. He has truly grown up and done an amazing job. DeMarcus Covington and Joe Kim, in my opinion, have done a fantastic job of assisting with his development. It all comes down to this: we want to maintain our own. We’ve spoken with Barmore and want to retain our own players. I hope everything turns out okay.
In the 2021 NFL Draft, Barmore was selected by the Patriots in the second round. He became a genuine all-around presence for the squad along its interior defensive line over the course of the following three seasons.
Barmore is a disruptive pass rusher who has made significant progress as a run defender. He has played in 45 games during the regular season and playoffs. In addition to 12.5 sacks, he has also been forced to fumble.
He had his finest season to date in 2023. After an injury-plagued sophomore season the year before, the 6-foot-5, 315-pound player recovered well, playing just under 66 percent of defensive snaps across 17 games. According to Pro Football Focus, he led New England’s defense with 56 total quarterback pressures and recorded a career- and team-high 8.5 quarterback takedowns.
Barmore is still a year away from free agency, but the rebuilding Patriots seem to be prioritizing him right away. Earlier in the offseason, they committed to four members of their 2020 draft class: they signed Josh Uche, Michael Onwenu, and Anfernee Jennings to new contracts and kept Kyle Dugger on the transition tag.
Based on Mayo’s remarks, Barmore could be the first person in the 2021 class to be imprisoned for an extended period of time.
