Reversing course Damien Harris declares his NFL retirement.
The five-year NFL veteran’s neck strain kept him out of most of his one and only season in Buffalo.
Using his Instagram profile, Damien Harris, who played for the Buffalo Bills in the 2023 NFL season, declared his retirement. On Monday night, he put the information online.
In his final season with the Bills, Harris—who turned 27 in February—carried 23 times for 94 yards and a running score. For 16 receiving yards, he added two receptions. After signing with the Bills, Josh Allen, the quarterback, would have less pressure in the red zone because of Harris’s aggressive running style, which helped him score 20 rushing touchdowns in four seasons with the New England Patriots.
But during Buffalo’s Week 6 victory over the New York Giants, Harris sprained his neck, necessitating his stretcher and ambulance ride off the field. Shortly after, he was put on Injured Reserve and didn’t play another snap for the Bills.
In the 2019 NFL Draft, Harris was selected by the Patriots in the third round, marking his NFL debut. Thirteen choices later, in the same round, the Bills selected running back Devin Singletary. With New England, Harris ran 202 times for 929 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2021, his best season as a professional. That season, Harris rushed 28 times for 214 yards and four rushing touchdowns in two games during the regular season against Buffalo.
When Harris announced his retirement, he was a free agent and had signed a one-year contract with the Bills during the previous offseason. Earlier in March, he and his spouse welcomed a kid into their family.
