Texans bench Myjai Sanders, a DE
Derek Barnett and Teair Tart, two of the Texans’ defensive linemen who were active on the waiver wire last year and were claimed in 2023, have signed contracts. While Tart joined the Dolphins, Barnett is back. Tart is off the roster, and another front-seven Texans claim will come after him.
Myjai Sanders, a third-round pick of the 2022 Cardinals, is being waived by the organization. After the new Cardinals administration turned their back on the draft pick from the Steve Keim era early, Sanders first arrived in Houston via waivers. Sanders’ rookie deal has two seasons left on it.
Midway through October, Sanders, a former Cincinnati standout, was acquired by Houston after Barnett and Tart were added via waivers. The young edge rusher was the Texans’ backup behind Will Anderson and Jonathan Greenard in seven games (138 defensive snaps). With Houston, 25-year-old Sanders did not register a sack.
In the last six months, this is Sanders’ second waiver exit. After designating Sanders for return, the Cardinals removed him from their injured reserve list. Despite suiting up for 13 games as a rookie and recording three sacks, Sanders only played four games with the Cards in the previous season. Behind Anderson and Greenard’s successor, Danielle Hunter, the Texans have Barnett and 2023 fourth-round selection Dylan Horton, who recently declared he was in remission following a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s cancer.
In addition, the Texans cut safety Josh Thompson and signed wide receiver Alex Bachman. Bachman hasn’t participated in any games since the 2021 campaign.
