Texas Longhorns RB Jaydon Blue hopes ‘to be gone’ in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Running back Jaydon Blue of the Texas Longhorns hopes to get some NFL looks in 2024.
AUSTIN: Professional and collegiate athletes frequently emphasize the importance of staying in the moment and not getting ahead of oneself, but Texas Longhorns running back Jaydon Blue is demonstrating that he is intellectually developed enough to strike a balance between the past, present, and future.
During his media appearance on Thursday, Blue was questioned about if the 2024 campaign will be his “contract year”. While most players would ignore the topic and insist that their sole concern is the next season, Blue was open about his goal of an NFL career.
“After this year, the plan is to be abandoned,” Blue declared. “We’ll see how the year goes, but hopefully at the end of this year, I’ll be gone.”
The phrase “hopefully I’ll be gone after this year” may raise some questions when taken out of context, therefore Texas supporters should exercise caution when interpreting these remarks. However, Texas running backs have established an NFL-caliber standard in Austin under head coach Tashard Choice, so it seems sense that Blue wants to be the next in line.
For the majority of the previous season, he was listed as the third running back on the depth chart; however, Blue and C.J. Baxter were thrust into more of a role due to Jonathan Brooks’ ACL injury. In pivotal moments, Blue displayed glimpses of his exceptional talent, scoring touchdowns in both the College Football Playoff and Big 12 championship games. He demonstrated his natural pass-catching ability by finishing the 2023 season with 14 receptions for 135 yards and another touchdown. He also finished the season with 65 carries for 398 yards and three touchdowns.
This season, Blue and Baxter are projected to be a formidable duo, but if last year’s finale is any guide, Blue may establish himself as the lead back.
On Saturday, April 20, Blue and the 2024 Longhorns will play their first-ever game in front of fans during the Orange-White Spring Game.
