Basketball commit from Tennessee The kind of basketball that DeWayne Brown plays is what big players like Rick Barnes are looking for. Brown chose the Vols over LSU, Alabama, and Mississippi State. In an effort to attract more young players after losing some to the portal this offseason, Barnes has also committed the first player from the 2025 class.
Brown may be among the best forwards in the 2025 class and a playmaker as a freshman for the Vols, even though he still has a few years until he dons the orange and white. Additionally, he stated that one of the main reasons he committed to the Vols was Tennessee’s style of play.
Following his formal visit to Tennessee in February, Brown remarked, “I feel like [Tennessee is] a pretty good match with my game.” They enjoy playing quickly, much as I do in high school and AAU. And under Coach Barnes, they play inside-out, which is fantastic in my opinion.
Barnes presses his forwards a lot, and the Vols usually have a strong squad when they respond. It was Jonas Aidoo and Tobe Awaka in the previous season. Previously, it was either Admiral Schofield and Grant Williams, or Uros Plavsic and John Fulkerson.
Brown might make up one side of another front duo that helps the Vols advance far in the NCAA Tournament or capture another SEC Championship. He brings to the 2025 recruiting class a great work ethic and a high basketball IQ—qualities that Barnes expects from every player he trains.
His dominance throughout high school has enabled Hoover High School to capture the state championship for the second time in a row. After averaging 15.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, he won the Class 7A Player of the Year award in Alabama.
Brown’s high school coach said that he is a versatile athlete who will perform any task that is asked of him. He also emphasizes the paint a lot in his game. He picked Tennessee in large part because it matched all the state might require of him on the court.
Brown’s potential as a college player is unknown, but judging on his high school stats thus far, Barnes and the Vols would be a fantastic fit for him. Additionally, as Barnes only signed one player from the 2024 class, he is the first recruit of the 2025 class.
