The San Francisco 49ers, the reigning NFC champions, had few needs on either side of the ball after coming close to winning the Super Bowl the previous year.
Having said that, general manager John Lynch and company need to focus on a few particular areas. This involves linebackers, offensive tackles, guards, centers, edge pass rushers, and possibly cornerbacks. Safety and depth at the narrow end could also be considered necessities.
Watching what San Francisco does on Thursday in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft is going to be interesting. If there isn’t a trade up or down the board, it is expected to choose at number 31 overall.
As the two parties continue to battle through contract extension talks, there are persistent whispers that the 49ers may trade star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk during the draft.
Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Media offered his last mock draft of 2024. He has Xavier Worthy, a wide receiver from Texas, heading to San Francisco.
“Out of the first round, this fit is my favorite. We have witnessed Tank Dell’s success in a comparable offensive scheme with Houston, and we are aware of the rapid progress Miami’s Mike McDaniel has made at receiver. Worthy provides Kyle Shanahan with a comparable tool.
The intriguing aspect about this situation is that Jeremiah does not anticipate Aiyuk being traded. Instead, San Francisco might perhaps combine Worthy with Deebo Samuel and the standout wide receiver to give Brock Purdy another potentially excellent weapon at this position.
At 31, the 6-foot-1 Worthy would undoubtedly be a compelling choice for San Francisco. The 49ers would be selecting a luxury pick with their first-round pick as opposed to going need-based.
Over the course of three seasons with the Longhorns, Worthy caught 197 receptions for 2,755 yards and 26 touchdowns. He would definitely fit in in San Francisco.
