Veteran RB Will Be Re-Signed by Texans
This offseason, the Houston Texans completely redesigned their running back room. Devin Singletary was traded to the New York Giants, and Joe Mixon was acquired to take his starting position.
Although the alteration at the top of the depth chart made headlines, another less visible action was taken to keep some stability at the position.
RB and core special team member Dare Ogunbowale, who primarily plays third-down and most famously kicked a game-winning 29-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of the previous season, is set to re-sign with the Texans, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Ogunbowale, who signed a one-year contract, may play a more significant role in the squad this season as a result of the new kickoff regulations, which may encourage greater inventiveness and emphasize the need of having dependable special teams players on the club.
Despite having only eight carries in the previous season, Ogunbowale has 457 career rushing yards and four touchdowns, making him one of the league’s top special teams performers.
With the exception of the one occasion when kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn was hurt and he was asked to attempt a game-winning field goal, he has played for the previous two seasons in Houston and has been a fixture on special teams during that time.
The first position player to kick a field goal since 2004 was Ogunbowale.
The 30-year-old will stay with the Texans for a third season, and with the new kickoff style, it will be intriguing to see if the organization gives him more responsibility.
