Mekhi Wingo, chosen by the Detroit Lions at number eighteen in the 2024 NFL Draft, now has a house.
After a longer than anticipated period, Mekhi Wingo’s wait is now officially over.
The Detroit Lions selected Wingo with the 189th overall pick in the sixth round. He was chosen as the third player selected today out of LSU.
Wingo started his collegiate career at Missouri before transferring to LSU. Over the last two seasons, he has been LSU’s top defensive lineman and was an All-American as a freshman at Mizzou.
His greatest season was in his sophomore year. With a career-high 46 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, and four passes batted down, Wingo’s improvement was especially crucial in light of the fact that LSU played the entire 2022 season with just three defensive tackles due to Maason Smith’s ACL tear.
Wingo was chosen a permanent team captain and given the coveted No. 18 jersey going into the 2023 season after his 2022 efforts earned him a spot on the second team of the SEC.
Wingo suffered a lower body injury that kept him out of the second part of the 2023 season, but he was back for LSU’s bowl match versus Wisconsin. Wingo produced three tackles and two sacks in the fourth quarter to help LSU rally and defeat the Badgers in the final game of the 2023 season, which was also his best.
Wingo performed worse than most people probably thought. Wingo was considered as a top-100 talent by most draft commentators, despite being slightly undersized for a defensive lineman. Wingo has a place to live and will now have the opportunity to compete for a roster position with the young Lions, so it doesn’t really matter where he gets selected.
