Sam Hartman, a quarterback, joins the Washington Commanders
Sam Hartman, a former quarterback for Notre Dame, signed a contract with the Washington Commanders.
Sam Hartman, a former quarterback for Notre Dame, did not hear his name called in the 2024 NFL Draft, but he still has hope of becoming an NFL squad. It was confirmed almost quickly after the seventh round that Hartman had already signed a contract with the Washington Commanders.
During the summer, the Commanders traded Sam Howell, their starter from the previous campaign, to the Seattle Seahawks. Jeff Driskel, Jake Fromm, and Marcus Mariota were the three quarterbacks on the roster as head coach Dan Quinn entered this year’s draft. In this year’s draft, Washington chose former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels with the second overall choice.
As one of the most prolific passers in game history, Hartman concluded his collegiate career with great success. With 15,656 throwing yards, 134 passing touchdowns, 1135 completions, 1898 attempts, and 20 scores from rushing, the North Carolina native concluded his career with impressive numbers. He is tied for third place all-time in throwing touchdowns, ranks fifth all-time in passing yards, and is seventh all-time in pass completions.
Hartman attended Wake Forest for his first five years of college before transferring to Notre Dame for the 2023 year. With a passing rating of 159.5 and 8.9 yards per attempt in 2023, he achieved career highs. In addition to three touchdowns on the rush, he passed for 2,689 yards and 24 touchdowns. After leading the squad to a 9-3 regular season record, Hartman made the decision not to participate in Notre Dame’s bowl game.
In 2018, Hartman joined the Deacons as a true freshman and finished the season with 1,984 yards and 16 touchdown passes. Hartman returned to the squad in 2020 as a starter after serving as a backup for the majority of the 2019 campaign. In 2022, Hartman had his best statistical season, passing for 39 touchdowns and 4,228 yards. That season, he led Wake Forest to an 11-3 record and an ACC Championship game while also scoring 11 touchdowns on the ground. During his last year at Wake Forest, he completed 3,701 passes for 38 touchdowns.
