Five days after selecting Brian Thomas Jr. in the first round of the draft, wide receiver Zay Jones was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jones’s $24 million, three-year contract was about to expire. The 29-year-old appeared to be fourth on the depth chart, so Jacksonville released him, eating $6.56 million in dead money while saving $4.18 million in cap space.
On Tuesday, April 30, Nick Wojton of USA Today said, “There’s a chance he’s added to Buffalo’s receiving room because of his ties to the Bills.” Keon Coleman was the sole receiver the Bills selected in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
In the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Bills traded up to select Jones. The East Carolina product had an arrest made in an off-season hotel altercation after failing to make an impact in his rookie campaign. But once Buffalo acquired quarterback Josh Allen, Jones turned in some impressive stats. He caught 56 passes for 652 yards and 7 touchdowns in the 2018 campaign.
In the end, Buffalo sent Jones to the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders in October 2019 in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2021. Jones arrived in Jacksonville following a three-season stint.
He caught 116 passes for 1,144 yards and 7 touchdowns in 25 games during the previous two seasons. Due to hamstring and knee problems, he missed eight games in the previous campaign. “He was also arrested on a domestic violence charge that was eventually dropped,” the AP said.
