Patriots sign renowned, experienced kicker
The New England Patriots are bolstering their meager kicker depth.
The Patriots are reportedly bringing in veteran kicker Joey Slye, according to an ESPN story on Thursday. Slye, 28, was released earlier this week after agreeing to a one-year contract in March with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Slye has been a starting kicker for a number of years. He has kicked for the Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, and Washington Commanders after being undrafted in 2018. Throughout his career, Slye has made 121 of 147 field goals (82.3%) and 138 of 156 extra point baskets (88.5%).
Slye had a few standout performances for Washington in the previous season, including a career-long 61-yard field goal and a skillful troll move against the Baltimore Ravens. With 16 of 25 field goals made (64.0 percent) in 2023, Chad Ryland was only mediocre, and Slye will be competing with him for the Patriots’ starting kicker position.
